Data the key foundation to planning
To create a cost/risk balanced network transformation strategy and business case – having the right data becomes critical.
Everyone who has every dealt with data in the telecommunications world understands the fragility of accurate data and its reconciliation – Carrier Networks- through CP’s platforms – through SI’s/Network Aggregators – through end customer inventory and billing causes inevitable data/billing inconsistencies.
In the business world, customer site mapping is essential and for CP’s, SI’s and Aggregators understanding accurate network inventory is also key.
Finding the data for Site and Customer/Services mapping
Identifying where the network & services data is stored (often myriad systems), ensuring all the relevant network attributes and customer data/site classifications (including Vulnerable & CNI) are held accurately as well as usage data is key – without this and an understanding of what future services are available from OR/Altnets and Mobile operators when, it’s impossible to construct a sensible plan/business case.
Where to manage the data mapping/reconciliation challenge?
The data associated with large networks is often fragmented across different systems and teams, is hard to bring together in a coherent model where there is sufficient hardware, database and data engineering skills/scale to facilitate the what if/options planning– this is a key challenge that needs addressing as soon as a business decides it wants to deliver a network migration/transition model of any scale.
Post Migration RMA
Assuming that an organisation deliver’s a successful migration – Billing & Network Inventory mapping/reconciliation pre and post migration is key – its highly likely there will be winners and losers during the process (over/underbilling through the lifetime of the e2e services) – however, when OR fully shut an exchange, the full picture of the challenge will be surfaced, better to be aware of the impacts before it potentially bites an organisation.
